Thing 23 – Final Thoughts

I’ll type this in before I leave my 2 voice threads, so I can close this browser window …

While I thought I was pretty up-to-date technologically speaking, these past 10 weeks have proved me wrong.  I’ve told teachers many times that one of the main reasons I love technology is because it keeps you sharp with its ever-changing, constant updating.  And yet, now that I’ve completed this course, I find that so many things have happened in the field that I knew very little about.  The biggest challenge is to keep learning; to keep abreast of the changes and improvements and to fold it all into our teaching to make ourselves relevant and effective.

As we begin the new school year, I have a long list of ideas to try to help teachers and students implement to make themselves more savvy and to enhance their teaching and their learning.

I joined Classroom 2.0 and found the threads a bit confusing. It was like walking into a room where there were hundreds of conversations going on and as you wander around you hear bits and pieces but unless you stay put and listen for a while, it all sounds like jibberish.  Still, I can see how, with time and focus, this could be a powerful tool in the workshop of how to make education more interesting/relevant/collaberative.

More and more interesting stuff for my math teachers and a wonderful article about inclusion ideas and resources.

I’ve sent this weeks’  ‘honey-do’ list for myself to Sue and Shelley.  Perhaps they’ll want to do some of the tasks???? I doubt it sincerely, but sharing is nice.   This is a wonderful way to keep teachers who are working on strategies for a specific student in the loop with one another.  The sharing of a collaberative project will be much easier with these tools.  Teaching kids how to work together with these tools could be very much worth the effort!

Thing 19 – You/Teacher Tube

I really enjoyed Technology in Teaching of how to circumvent the blocking of You/Teacher Tube in schools by saving them in a converted format.  Teaching with Technology from You Tube gave me renewed confidence to try to produce a video yearbook.  Expertvillage.com had videos with easy to follow directions for how to cast on, knit, and bind off stitches on knitting needles.  And for fun … I LOVED the television series West Wing and was able to discover a video of clips, portraying 2 of the main characters pulling practical jokes on each other.

Tech on the Fly, a podcast from The Education Podcast Network, sounded really interesting.  It was disappointing in that it was very much like listening to a radio station with lots and LOTS and L-O-T-S of commercials.   They finally got onto giving information about twit.com, Microsoft and Yahoo’s merger and other interesting tidbits of tech news.  I’ll probably continue to seek other podcasts of how-to’s of teaching information but I’m not sure when I’d have time to listen to full podcasts.

I thought this was a delightful site! I found the factoid of Harry Potter/J.K.Rowling being at the tops of multiple lists interesting but not surprising.  I can see our school’s informal book club posting up here and using the resources to discover new titles for us to read.

This was fun! I actually went un-academic and tagged sites for quilts [my creative outlet] and ‘foodies’ [I love to make creative desserts!].  That said, it’s certainly obvious how this could be beneficial to a group of teachers with similar topics.  I know I’ll be sharing this with my teachers next week.

I continue to love loonyhiker’s posts, and continue to send links of her articles to many of my co-teachers.  I’ve stopped with the NY Times; they continue to cover the Michael Jackson story as if it were important.
